Egg Shell Quality

Precision mineral and vitamin programs formulated to improve egg shell strength, reduce breakage, and support consistent shell formation throughout the laying cycle.

The Challenge

Shell quality losses cost producers at every stage.

Cracked and thin-shelled eggs represent direct revenue loss at packing and export. Industry estimates place total losses from poor shell quality — including downgraded, cracked, and floor eggs — at 5–12% of total egg output in commercial layer operations under heat stress or late-cycle conditions.

As hens age beyond 45 weeks, calcium absorption efficiency declines and shell gland transit time shortens, reducing the amount of calcium deposited per egg. This physiological shift is compounded by heat stress, which suppresses feed intake and disrupts acid-base balance — further reducing the calcium available for shell calcification.

Export-oriented producers face additional pressure: international buyers and retail chains increasingly specify minimum shell thickness, breaking strength (>30 N), and cuticle coverage as quality acceptance criteria. Nutritional shortfalls that are tolerable in domestic markets can result in full consignment rejections at export.

Our Approach

Calcium, vitamin D3, and trace mineral precision.

ViaFeed egg shell quality programs combine optimized calcium particle size blends — coarse limestone (2–4 mm) for sustained overnight release alongside fine limestone for rapid morning availability — ensuring calcium supply is matched to the shell gland's 20-hour calcification cycle.

Highly bioavailable vitamin D3 metabolites (25-OH-D3) are incorporated to enhance intestinal calcium absorption, particularly in older flocks where conversion of standard D3 to its active form is impaired. This approach delivers measurable improvements in shell thickness and breaking strength within 2–3 weeks of program initiation.

Organic trace mineral complexes — zinc, manganese, and copper in amino acid or proteinate form — support shell matrix protein synthesis (osteopontin, ovocleidin-17) and cuticle deposition, improving both structural integrity and microbial barrier function of the shell.

Heat stress mitigation actives (sodium bicarbonate, potassium chloride, betaine) are included in summer formulations to correct respiratory alkalosis-driven calcium loss. Recommended inclusion: 2.0–3.5 kg/tonne of complete layer feed, adjusted by flock age, season, and target shell quality specification.
