Rumen Buffer Blends

Specialized rumen buffering programs designed to stabilize rumen pH, support fiber digestion, and maintain consistent dairy and beef performance under high-concentrate feeding conditions.

The Challenge

Rumen acidosis limits production potential.

High-energy diets in modern dairy and beef systems create persistent pressure on rumen pH. Sub-acute ruminal acidosis (SARA) — defined as prolonged periods of rumen pH below 5.8 — is one of the most costly and underdiagnosed conditions in intensive ruminant production.

SARA reduces dry matter intake, impairs fiber-digesting microbial populations, and triggers systemic inflammation that manifests as laminitis, reduced reproductive performance, and increased somatic cell counts in dairy herds. In beef operations, it contributes to liver abscesses and inconsistent daily gain.

Transition cows are especially at risk during the first 3–4 weeks post-calving, when diet shifts from high-forage dry cow rations to energy-dense lactation diets. Without adequate buffering capacity, this period drives the majority of early-lactation health events and peak milk shortfalls.

Our Approach

Targeted buffering for real farm conditions.

ViaFeed rumen buffer blends are formulated with sodium bicarbonate, magnesium oxide, and complementary buffering agents — including calcium carbonate and live yeast fractions — calibrated for the forage-to-concentrate ratios common in international dairy and beef operations.

Sodium bicarbonate provides rapid pH correction in the rumen fluid, while magnesium oxide offers a slower, sustained buffering effect that extends protection through the post-feeding period. The combination delivers both immediate and prolonged pH stabilization.

Live yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) inclusion supports rumen microbial diversity, enhances fiber digestion efficiency, and reduces oxygen tension in the rumen — creating a more stable fermentation environment that complements the chemical buffering action.

Recommended inclusion: 150–250 g/head/day for dairy cows; 80–120 g/head/day for beef cattle. Blend ratios are adjusted based on total mixed ration (TMR) composition, forage quality, and production stage. Custom formulations available for high-starch finishing diets.
